What a great earth friendly tip from Sarah Lloyd, www.kitchenclarity.com:

Turn off the faucet

According to the EPA you can save 8 gallons of water a day if you don’t leave the water running while you clean your teeth. The average faucet runs at 2 gallons per minute – low flow faucets help, but shutting off the water while you brush teeth, shave, etc. can really make a difference.

Hey foodies! What’s your favorite earth-friendly tip. Leave a comment below. Here’s another great tip from BLANCO Design Council member Sarah Lloyd, www.kitchenclarity.com

Keep your refrigerator full – but not overfull.

The more you open the door, the more energy your refrigerator will use, as cooled air spills out each time and the compressor has to work to get back to that same temperature. So if your refer is well stocked with all those great food and drink items your family needs, there is less air space, and less air can spill out each time. Although the compressor has to work to cool all those good things down to start with, they do not spill out and have to be re-cooled the way circulating air does. (Though if you have teenage boys around, they might disappear almost as fast as the air). Just make sure you don’t overfill – if air can’t circulate at all then your foods may not be preserved properly

Bring your own mug

Have you ever counted how many paper cups and plastic lids you and your co-workers collect from the coffee shop over a week? Even if they do get recycled, there is an energy cost to do it. Buy your own ceramic coffee mug with a lid and use that instead.. In a quote from www.greenstarbucks.wordpress.com

“‘If only 50 customers a day in every store were to use reusable mugs, Starbucks would save 150,000 disposable paper cups daily. This equals 1.7 million pounds of paper, 3.7 million pounds of solid waste, and 150,000 trees a year.’ In 2000 when this report was generated there were only 6500 stores worldwide. In 2007 there are 13,168 stores which means over 300,000 trees could be saved from landfills by BRINGING YOUR OWN CUP.”

Here’s a great Earth Day tip from Sarah Lloyd, www.kitchenclarity.com. Leave us a tip in the comments area. What’s your way to conserve? Let’s save the Earth, one tip at a time.

Hang your laundry out to dry
Install a washing line outside if you can and use it in fine weather. You’ll save energy – dryers are one of the energy hogs in your home, accounting for maybe 6% of an average fuel bill, or $20 to $50 per month, depending on the size of your family. As well as saving money and energy, remember that UV light from the sun whitens and sterilizes naturally, and laundry dried outside smells great, naturally, so you won’t need so many additives in your wash. Your clothes should last longer, as tumble drying heats and beats the fibers, wearing things out over time.  As a side benefit – you get a little more exercise, bending and lifting, so you get to tone your abs and arms while helping the environment.
