Leave a comment with your own earth-friendly tip for a chance to win a BLANCO SOLON Compost System. One winner will be drawn on Earth Day – 4/22/12.
With Earth Day right around the corner, it is important to remember earth-friendly tips that can help make your life easy and more eco-friendly all year long. Leslie Hoffman is the curator of the Shelter Island “Gimme Shelter Project” and offers ways to incorporate composting as a lifestyle.
In her new Shelter Island Kitchen, Hoffman has installed 4 garbage cans, a worm bin and a compost bucket recessed into the counter top. “By making sure that the proper receptacles are built into your space, you will ensure that everyone separates the trash for best recycling results,” Hoffman states. “All of my food waste will stay right on my property, and everything else will be presorted for neatly being taken to the recycling center.”
GIMME SHELTER is intended as a story-telling vehicle to inspire conversation about community and sustainability. The project website, www.gimmeshelterproject.org/ provides extensive information about the project. The project can also be followed on Facebook and @shelterhg on Twitter.

Organic Textiles
Organic textiles are simply made from organically grown crops fertilized with manure instead of harmful fertilizers and pesticides. Luckily, there are many fine, even luxurious, organic textiles on the market made from materials such as cotton, silk, hemp, linen and wool. Look for “certified green” organic home décor fabrics, bed linens and even pillows.

Another great tip from designer and BLANCO Design Council member Jamie Goldberg, AKBD, CAPS, http://jgkitchens.blogspot.com: Use a countertop oven to bake or broil small items; this will use less energy than running a full-sized oven.

Keep your refrigerator full – but not overfull.
The more you open the door, the more energy your refrigerator will use, as cooled air spills out each time and the compressor has to work to get back to that same temperature. So if your refer is well stocked with all those great food and drink items your family needs, there is less air space, and less air can spill out each time. Although the compressor has to work to cool all those good things down to start with, they do not spill out and have to be re-cooled the way circulating air does. (Though if you have teenage boys around, they might disappear almost as fast as the air). Just make sure you don’t overfill – if air can’t circulate at all then your foods may not be preserved properly

Don’t rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher to save water.
(According to the EPA – this can save 20 gallons of water per load. Hand washing is a huge water waster! And most dishwashers today can clean effectively without the pre-rinse. Plus think of the time it saves – not having to wash your dishes before your dishwasher does the job.)

The lesser of two evils: Buy a set of plastic [or better, glass] storage containers with lids, and say goodbye to toss-away plastic bags.

Hang your laundry out to dry
Install a washing line outside if you can and use it in fine weather. You’ll save energy – dryers are one of the energy hogs in your home, accounting for maybe 6% of an average fuel bill, or $20 to $50 per month, depending on the size of your family. As well as saving money and energy, remember that UV light from the sun whitens and sterilizes naturally, and laundry dried outside smells great, naturally, so you won’t need so many additives in your wash. Your clothes should last longer, as tumble drying heats and beats the fibers, wearing things out over time. As a side benefit – you get a little more exercise, bending and lifting, so you get to tone your abs and arms while helping the environment.
