This guest post by designer and BLANCO Design Council member Andie Day speaks to looking good and feeling great with a lifestyle modification that will improve your quality of life and help the planet too.  If you’re on the fence about becoming a vegetarian, pescatarian (diet includes fish but no other meat) or simply becoming more health conscious by reducing your weekly consumption of red meat and poultry consider the following:

”As environmental science has advanced, it has become apparent that the human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future: deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, the destabilization of communities, and the spread of disease.” Worldwatch Institute, “Is Meat Sustainable?”
mid section view of a woman cutting vegetables“If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.” Environmental Defense Fund. Reported by the Daily Green (http://www.thedailygreen.com/)

Personally, I haven’t consumed red meat for years and poultry since November. It’s been a surprisingly easy transition as alternatives are readily available. Most restaurants offer at least a vegetarian plate or two and savvy supermarket chains with an eye toward the trending vegan lifestyle boast more options than ever before.  Two of my favorite lifestyle brands are Gardein (mandarin orange crispy chicken-delish) and Amy’s (California Veggie burger or easy to prepare and frozen meals).

Happy Earth Day. Enjoy and be healthy! Andie xo

Here’s some of the latest news on BLANCO from The Kansas City Star, Andie Day, Apartment Therapy, K + BB, Modenus, Vegas Seven, and The Sacramento Bee.

BLANCO exhibited at ICFF this week in New York City to launch the award-winning new CULINA faucet, SILGRANIT II® Truffle sinks and the innovative new PERFORMA 1-3/4 Low Divide. Interest in new products ran high and it was exciting to hear architects and designers start out conversations with, “I have a client who…” and “I have a project that…”

BLANCO held a tweet-up with Modenus that attracted about 50 designers/bloggers to the booth Sunday afternoon. “Truffletinis” were served in celebration of the new SILGRANIT II Truffle color. A tweet up is a gathering of Twitter users who want to meet in person and our event partner, Modenus is an online design community that is very popular among social media users. BLANCO gave away $1,000 in products to one lucky winner: Laura Herrick of Wydian Kitchens and Design.

From Kitchen Designer and BLANCO Design Council member Andie Day, www.andieday.com/blog – another great Earth Day tip:

Renewable Table Top Décor & Candles
Instead of fresh cut flowers on tabletops, place potted herbs, grasses and small house plants for an earthy approach. Replace paraffin wax and beeswax candles with soy wax candles which are better for your health and the environment. (Soybeans are a renewable resource.)

Is it tip #9 already? Just 22 days till Earth Day!

Andie Day, Design for Life has this to say about what’s under our footprint.

Green Floor Coverings
Recycled products and renewable natural resources are keywords when selecting your floor coverings. You’ll want to pass on area rugs and carpets made with synthetic fibers. Instead reach for ones made of natural materials such as jute, sisal and sea grass for a casual décor and renewable resources such as fine Shetland wool or vegetable or plant died wools for a more formal look.

Welcome to our countdown to Earth Day. What better way to celebrate and protect the planet than by offering 30+ earth-friendly tips gleaned from design professionals – including BLANCO’s own Design Council kitchen bloggers? Here’s our first one from Andie Day, Design for Life.

Composting from sink is easy with BLANCO's 3-in-1 strainer.

Going green with your interior design has never been easier. From furniture made with sustainable materials to composting right from your kitchen sink, many manufacturers are offering a myriad of planet-conscience products for the home. You’re now able to achieve high impact design results while keeping your impact on Mother Nature at an all time low.

Eco-friendly Furniture
Choosing fine furniture for your home while keeping it green requires a two-fold approach. First, you’ll want to buy from a manufacturer which ensures their products are made with low to zero toxicity (many traditional paints, finishes and dyes emit high levels of VOCs.) Look for the “Greenguard” label which assures low toxicity. Secondly, you’ll want to go for furnishings made from sustainable materials and recycled resources such as bamboo and rattan as well as organic textiles on upholstered pieces. The labels to look for here: Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC); Rainforest Alliance; or Rediscovered Wood Certification.

BLANCO’s Design Council is a group of elite kitchen design professionals who also blog. BLANCO’s industrial designers work closely with this talented group to dream up new ideas for sink and faucet innovations. Importantly, the Design Council offers you links to the best ideas and resources for kitchen design. We would like to welcome three new members for 2011:  Andie Day (www.andieday.com/blog), Sarah Lloyd (www.kitchenclarity.com) and Vicki Payne (www.foryourhome.com). We invite you to visit all the Design Council blogs for today’s hottest design trends.

Stay tuned as next week we begin our 30 day countdown to Earth Day with daily tips from BLANCO’s Design Council to make our homes more “earth friendly.” Follow us on Twitter @blancoamerica.
